In short
For a winter wedding, tweed, velvet and tailored separates all work well. Tweed gives warmth and texture, velvet gives an evening feel, and separates give you an outfit you will wear again after the day.
A winter wedding has real advantages: venues, photographers and planners are easier to book, the day is usually held indoors, and the whole thing tends to feel more intimate. The clothing question is simply what to wear when it is cold and mostly interior.
Tweed
Tweed is warm and comes in the deep greens, burgundies, browns and blues that suit the season. It also gives you texture without pattern — fine tweeds, Donegals and herringbones all read as interesting rather than loud. We work with Scottish and Irish mills, and a contrasting waistcoat is an easy way to add depth. A tweed jacket also carries on afterwards as a separate.
Velvet
Velvet jackets have become steadily more popular for winter weddings. Cotton velvets are the usual choice, made either as a dinner jacket with silk lapels or as a smart evening jacket without. Single or double breasted both work, and frogging on the front and cuff is available if you want the jacket to be genuinely individual.
Separates
If you do not wear a suit to work, separates make more sense than a matching three-piece. Different cloths for jacket, waistcoat and trousers produce an outfit that suits a less formal wedding and is wearable long after it — a jacket with chinos rather than a full suit.
