In short
A groom should wear a lightweight suit in a breathable cloth for a summer wedding. Pale grey, soft blue, tan, lightweight navy and linen blends all work well, and an unlined or half-lined jacket will keep you cooler.
Summer weddings are wonderful until you are standing in direct sun in a heavy wool suit. The right cloth and construction make the difference between enjoying the day and counting the minutes until you can take your jacket off.
Best summer cloths
- Linen and linen blends — breathable but crease easily; choose a relaxed cut.
- Lightweight wool, 240–280g — holds its shape better than linen and still breathes.
- Wool-linen-silk mixes — soft, slightly textured and ideal for warm-weather weddings.
- Cotton twill or seersucker — very casual; best for informal outdoor weddings.
Colour and construction
Pale colours reflect heat. A half-lined or unlined jacket, softer shoulder and looser trouser cut all improve comfort. Save heavy flannel and tweed for autumn and winter.
