In short

The father of the bride should wear a suit that matches the formality of the wedding but sits slightly below the groom in prominence. A navy or charcoal lounge suit, or morning dress for a formal daytime wedding, is usually correct.

The father of the bride has a visible role in photographs and the ceremony, so his suit should look considered. At the same time, he should not draw attention away from the couple.

Coordinating with the groom

  • If the groom is in navy, the father might wear charcoal or mid grey.
  • If the groom is in morning dress, the father should also wear morning dress.
  • A tie or pocket square in a complementary colour ties the party together.

Practical considerations

Fathers often prefer a slightly more generous cut and a cloth that is comfortable for a long day. A made-to-measure suit ensures the fit is right without being tight, and the garment can be worn again for other occasions.
