In short

Morning dress is the most formal daytime option, with a tailcoat, striped trousers and waistcoat. A lounge suit is a modern matching jacket and trousers, correct for most weddings and far more wearable afterwards.

The choice usually comes down to how traditional the wedding is, what time it starts, and whether you are likely to wear the suit again.

Morning dress

  • Correct for formal daytime weddings, usually before 4pm.
  • Black or charcoal tailcoat, striped or checked trousers, waistcoat.
  • Often hired, but a made-to-measure morning suit fits and looks far better.
  • Best for royal, military, church and very traditional weddings.

Lounge suit

  • The default for modern weddings.
  • Navy, charcoal or mid grey in a two- or three-piece.
  • Wears again for business, dinners and other occasions.
  • Easier to personalise with cloth texture, lining and details.

The practical choice

Unless the invitation specifies morning dress, a well-cut lounge suit is almost always the right answer. It looks smart, feels comfortable and gives you a suit you can wear for years.

Talk it through in person.
