In short
Charcoal is the most formal suit colour short of black. It is the strongest choice for serious business, interviews and funerals, and works best in a plain or faintly striped worsted of 300–340g.
Where navy is friendly, charcoal is authoritative. It is the traditional suit of the City, and the correct answer whenever you want the clothes to be sober rather than interesting.
Charcoal, mid grey or light grey
- Charcoal — formal, evening-capable, the best second suit after navy.
- Mid grey — softer and more approachable; excellent for separates and country jackets.
- Light grey — summer and daytime weddings, less useful in a British winter.
Cloth
A plain charcoal worsted at 300–340g is the classic. Flannel in charcoal is one of the great British cloths — soft, warm and quietly luxurious from October to March. Pick-and-pick or faint birdseye adds depth from close range while still reading as plain across a room.
Wearing it
Black shoes are the natural partner; dark brown works with the lighter greys. White shirts keep it formal, blue softens it. Charcoal is also the most forgiving colour for a suit that will be worn hard several days a week.
