In short
Mid and bright blues are best as a second or third suit. They read as modern and less formal than navy, photograph strongly at weddings, and work particularly well in lighter summer cloths and soft checks.
The blue range
- Mid blue — daytime, weddings and summer; livelier than navy without being loud.
- Airforce and slate blue — softer, excellent for jackets worn as separates.
- Blue-ground checks — Prince of Wales and windowpane in blue tones for country and weekend tailoring.
Cloth and season
Blues gain from open weaves and light finishes: fresco, wool-linen and hopsack all keep the colour alive rather than glassy. In winter, blue flannel is a good alternative to grey.
How to wear it
Brown shoes, in every shade from tan to chocolate. Pale blue, pink and white shirting all sit well. Keep the tie textured rather than shiny and the suit stays smart without turning corporate.
