In short
A black suit is for funerals, some evening events and certain professions. For business, weddings and daily wear, navy or charcoal is a better and more flattering choice.
Black suiting has one great strength — gravity — and one weakness: it drains colour from most faces in daylight and can look flat rather than rich unless the cloth is very good.
Where black is right
- Funerals and memorials, with a white shirt and black tie.
- Evening events that ask for a dark suit rather than black tie.
- Professions where a black suit is effectively the working uniform.
Where it is not
A black suit is not a dinner suit — it lacks the facings, the braid and the cloth. It is also a weak choice for a daytime wedding, where navy, mid grey or morning dress will photograph far better.

Spend on the cloth. A high-quality black worsted with a slight depth of finish avoids the cheap flatness that makes budget black suits look grey after a season.
