Wool is more versatile, resists creasing and works year-round; linen is cooler and more casual but creases easily. Choose wool for business and travel, linen for hot weather and relaxed occasions.
Wool and linen are the two classic suit fibres, but they behave very differently. Most wardrobes need both, in different weights and for different seasons.
Wool
- Holds its shape and resists creasing.
- Available in weights from 240g summer cloth to 420g winter cloth.
- Suitable for business, weddings and formal occasions.
Linen
- Extremely cool and breathable.
- Creases almost immediately; this is part of its character.
- Best in pale colours for summer weddings, holidays and smart-casual events.
The compromise: wool-linen blends
A wool-linen blend, often with a little silk, gives the coolness of linen with the structure of wool. It is our usual recommendation for a summer suit that still needs to look sharp at the end of the day.
