The best summer suit fabric is a lightweight open-weave wool, around 240–280g, or a wool-linen blend. Pure linen is coolest but creases heavily; high-twist wool stays crisp and breathable in heat.
A summer suit needs to do two things: keep you cool and still look like a suit. The heaviest winter worsted will drape well but overheat; the lightest linen will breathe but collapse by lunchtime. The answer is usually in the middle.
Lightweight wool
A 240–280g high-twist wool, such as a Fresco or a tightly woven tropical, is the most reliable hot-weather suit. It is breathable, resistant to creasing and holds its shape through travel and long days.
Linen and cotton
- Pure linen is the coolest option and looks relaxed; expect creases.
- Cotton suits are casual and matte; best for smart-casual occasions rather than formal business.
- Wool-linen blends give structure with extra breathability.
Colour and construction
Lighter colours reflect heat: pale grey, oatmeal, stone and light blue all work well in summer. A quarter- or half-lined jacket improves airflow. For weddings abroad, consider a soft shoulder and patch pockets for a more relaxed silhouette.
