Women and the work suit: colour, cut and confidence

In short
For women, a work suit should be chosen around the working environment first: dark navy or charcoal where the outfit should go unnoticed, and more distinctive cloth, colour or cut where personality is welcome.
For men the work suit is effectively a uniform, with long-standing conventions on fit, trouser length and colour. Women's tailoring has no equivalent rulebook. That is liberating, but it also means every decision is yours to make.
Start with the environment
If the role calls for you to look professional while the outfit itself goes unnoticed, dark navy and charcoal do that job perfectly. Where more individuality is welcome, cloth with a check, a stripe or a stronger colour will carry it without becoming a costume.
Then the cut
- Single-breasted with a soft shoulder for an easy, everyday jacket.
- Double-breasted for something more structured and deliberate.
- Trousers, or a skirt, cut for the way you actually sit and move at work.
- A waistcoat or a third piece to give one suit two distinct looks.
