What to Wear to the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Smart, Relaxed and Ready for British Weather

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is very different from the Goodwood Revival. You don't need to arrive dressed like Stirling Moss. In fact, Goodwood's official guidance recommends casual clothing and comfortable flat footwear because the Festival takes place largely outdoors in parkland. Smart casual dress applies to corporate hospitality areas. That makes the Festival of Speed an excellent opportunity for smart-casual tailoring.

The Shirt Jacket

One of our favourite pieces for Goodwood is the shirt jacket. It sits somewhere between a tailored jacket and overshirt and can be worn with a T-shirt, polo or lightweight shirt. Pair it with made-to-measure jeans or chinos and you have an outfit that feels considered without being overdressed.

The Unstructured Jacket

A softly constructed jacket works equally well. Think lightweight wool, linen blends, cotton or textured cloth rather than a formal business suit. Wear it with chinos, jeans or tailored trousers.

Polo Shirts and T-Shirts

A good-quality knitted polo or properly fitted T-shirt can work extremely well underneath a casual jacket. The important thing is fit. Smart casual doesn't mean careless.

Jeans

Dark indigo or clean mid-blue jeans are ideal. A made-to-measure pair gives you a cleaner silhouette and avoids excessive fabric around the seat and leg.

Footwear

Comfort matters. You'll spend a large part of the day walking around the Goodwood Estate. Suede loafers, comfortable boots or smart trainers can all work depending on the outfit and conditions.

Prepare for Rain

It's Britain. Even Goodwood recommends bringing lightweight wet-weather clothing. A lightweight mac, field coat or raincoat is considerably more useful than trying to shelter your beautifully tailored jacket under somebody else's umbrella.
