In short
Most men need between one and five suits. One navy suit covers occasional wear; two to three suits cover a job that requires tailoring several times a week; four to five allows a full rotation with seasonal cloths and lets each suit rest and last far longer.
The order to buy in
- 01 — Navy worsted. Work, weddings, funerals and interviews.
- 02 — Charcoal worsted or flannel. The formal counterweight to navy.
- 03 — A lighter or patterned suit: mid grey, blue or a soft Prince of Wales check.
- 04 — A seasonal suit: fresco or wool-linen for summer, flannel for winter.
- 05 — Something with character: double-breasted, chalk stripe or a country suit.
Rotation makes suits last
Wool needs a day or two to recover its shape between wearings. Two suits worn alternately will outlast one suit worn daily by more than double, so a second suit is usually better value than any single upgrade.
Suits versus separates
If your work no longer demands tailoring every day, two good suits plus a blazer, a tweed jacket and two or three pairs of trousers will cover more situations than five suits. We often build a wardrobe in that shape across a couple of years.
Budget honestly
One suit that fits properly and is worn constantly is worth more than three that hang unworn. Start with the navy, wear it hard, and let the gaps in your week tell you what to commission next.
