A waistcoat changes the formality and the usefulness of a suit. It is not always the right addition, but it is often the one people are gladdest they chose.
The case for a two-piece
- Cleaner and more modern for everyday business.
- Easier to wear as separates with a different jacket or trousers.
- Costs less and travels lighter.
The case for a three-piece
- More formal and finished, especially for weddings.
- Lets you remove the jacket and still look dressed.
- Adds warmth in winter and covers a shirt that might otherwise show.
Cost and cloth
A waistcoat uses less cloth than a jacket but still needs cutting, lining and buttons. If the budget is tight, put the money into the cloth first and add the waistcoat later; a good two-piece is better than a thin three-piece.
When to order it
Order the waistcoat with the suit, not afterwards. Cloth batches vary, and a waistcoat cut from the same roll at the same time will always match better than one made later.
