How should a suit jacket fit?

In short
A suit jacket should sit flat on the shoulders, close cleanly at the chest and waist, keep the collar against your shirt, end around the middle of your trouser fly, and show about half an inch of shirt cuff.
The jacket is the most visible part of a suit and the part people get wrong most often. Here is what to look for when you put one on.
Shoulders and collar
The shoulder seam should end exactly at your shoulder bone. The collar should lie flat against your shirt all the way around; a gap means the jacket is pitched wrongly for your stance.
Chest and waist
- Fasten the top button: the jacket should lie smooth, not pull.
- You should be able to slide a flat hand inside the fastened jacket; a fist should feel snug.
- The waist should be defined but not pinched.
Length and sleeves
For most men, the jacket hem covers the seat and ends around the middle of the trouser fly. Longer jackets can shorten the legs; shorter ones can look fashion-forward but are harder to wear formally. Sleeves should reveal roughly half an inch of shirt cuff.
The back view
From behind, the jacket should hang straight down the centre back without swinging to one side. Horizontal wrinkles below the shoulder blades usually mean the jacket is too long in the back or the sleeves are pitched too far forward.
