How long should a suit jacket be?

In short
A suit jacket should be long enough to cover the seat and end around the middle of the trouser fly. For most men that means the hem hitting roughly midway between the knuckle of a relaxed thumb and the base of the thumb.
Jacket length changes the proportions of the whole suit. Too short and the legs look truncated; too long and the body looks heavy.
The rule of thumb
With your arm relaxed, the jacket hem should fall between the base of your thumb and the middle of your thumb knuckle. That usually places the hem around the middle of the trouser fly and covers the seat from behind.
Adjusting for build
- Taller men with long torsos can take a slightly longer jacket without it looking old-fashioned.
- Shorter men should avoid going too short; a jacket that just covers the seat is usually better than a cropped fashion cut.
- If you have a fuller stomach, a slightly longer front can balance the silhouette.
Fashion vs classic
Very short jackets come and go with fashion. A classic length will still look right in ten years, which is why we usually advise customers to err on the longer side for a first commission.
