In short
A suit fits when the shoulders sit flat without overhang, the collar stays against your shirt, the jacket closes without strain, the sleeves show half an inch of shirt cuff, and the trousers sit at your natural waist with a clean break over the shoe.
Fit is the single thing that makes a suit look expensive or cheap, regardless of price. These are the points we check every time a customer tries on a suit.
Shoulders
The shoulder seam should end at the point of your shoulder. If it extends beyond, the jacket is too big; if it sits short, it will pull across the upper back. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so they must be right from the start.
Collar and chest
- The collar should sit flat against your shirt collar without a gap.
- The jacket should close cleanly at the button; if it pulls into an X, it is too tight.
- There should be no hollow or flare below the buttoning point.
Sleeves and trousers
- Sleeve length: about half an inch of shirt cuff should show.
- Trouser waist: should sit at your natural waist, not your hips.
- Trouser length: a slight break over the front of the shoe; no pooling at the heel.
Movement
A good suit lets you move. Reach forward, sit down and put your hands in your pockets. If the jacket rides up dramatically or the sleeves pull away from the cuff, the balance or pitch needs adjusting.
