In short
The best winter suit fabric is a 340–420g wool, either a dense worsted or a wool flannel. Flannel is warmer and softer, tweed is the most rugged, and cashmere blends add luxury for jackets and overcoats.
Winter cloth has weight. It drapes more dramatically, feels warmer and looks richer than summer cloth. The trade-off is that a winter suit will be too warm indoors for much of the year, so winter cloths are often chosen for specific garments rather than an all-year two-piece.
Worsted and flannel
- 340–380g worsted — the everyday winter business cloth, sharp and hard-wearing.
- Flannel — brushed for softness and warmth; charcoal and navy flannel are British classics.
- Cavalry twill and covert cloth — sturdy, slightly informal options for country and weekend suits.
Tweed and heavier cloths
Tweed is technically a category of its own: rougher, patterned and extremely durable. It makes excellent jackets and country suits but is usually too heavy and informal for city business. A 420g tweed jacket over flannel trousers is a classic winter combination.
Cashmere and blends
A small percentage of cashmere in a wool jacket adds softness and warmth. We avoid cashmere for trousers because it wears quickly at the seat and knees. For overcoats, a wool-cashmere blend is one of the best investments in a winter wardrobe.
