What is a made-to-measure suit?

Made-to-measure sits between buying a suit off the peg and commissioning bespoke. Rather than starting from a blank sheet of paper, we start from a proven pattern and alter it — sometimes in a dozen small ways — until it answers your body rather than an average one.

How it works, step by step

• We talk about where and how often the suit will be worn before anything is measured.
• You choose the cloth from the mill bunches, with weight and weave chosen for the way you will use it.
• You choose the details: lapel shape and width, vents, pockets, buttons, lining, trouser cut and finish.
• We take your measurements and note posture — shoulder slope, stance, how you stand when you are not thinking about it.
• The pattern is altered to those figures and the garment is cut and made.
• You return for a fitting, and any final adjustments are made before the suit is finished.

What makes it different from alterations

A shop suit taken in by a tailor can only move seams that already exist. Made-to-measure changes the pattern before the cloth is cut, so the balance of the jacket, the position of the buttoning point and the set of the sleeve can all be right from the beginning rather than approximated afterwards.

Who it suits

Most people, most of the time. It is the sensible route for a first tailored suit, a wedding, or a working wardrobe you expect to wear hard. If you have a posture that has defeated every suit you have owned, or you want a particular hand-made construction, that is where bespoke earns its cost.

What to expect at the end

A suit that closes cleanly without pulling, a collar that stays against your neck when you move, sleeves and trousers finished to the right length, and cloth you actually chose. Nothing exotic — just a garment that behaves.
